3 Steps to Water Damage Clean Up

Executive summary about the water by David A. Selter

1. Water Removal

The sooner the better. This will typically involve extraction to remove the standing water, and the removal of saturated materials that hold water such as; carpet pad, damaged sheetrock, and insulation.

2. Drying with dehumidifiers and air movers

Fast drying through the use of dehumidifiers and air movers is critical for mitigating the effects of water and moisture laden air during remediation.

3. Repair to get your life back to normal

Once the structure has been tested by a water damage contractor to ensure that it is completely dry, you can begin repairing the damage to get things back to normal. Most contractors who perform water removal and drying will also offer water damage repair.

Water Softener Or Water Filter?

Water, the substance we depend on for survival; odorless, colorless and tasteless yet basal to the survival of all life. Hard water can indeed be damaging to your home’s plumbing and appliances. When home owners are on municipal sewage systems the salt brine from softeners or conditioners backwashes into the system. Sodium makes its way into the nation’s waterways. Those same waterways eventually become the water provide to other homes additional down the stream. In some cities, sodium from water softeners has become such a challenge they have banned the use of salt brine conditioners altogether.

Beyond the challenges of sodium in the system, softeners do nothing to address the larger problems of contamination. Cysts, chemicals and disinfection byproducts, pharmaceuticals and other carcinogens numbering in the hundreds are in the public and well water supplies. The salt brine systems price tag is pretty impressive.

There is a new, state-of-the-art alternative that provides not only the ultimate in water softening, but the ultimate in purification as well. It’s called Nano-filtration.

Nano-filtration does not waste two-thirds of the water advent into the theory as reverse osmosis does, works with an industrialized hollow carbon technology that is far first-rate to old fashioned carbon block. Then it troops the water straight through a membrane to remove everything down to .0001 microns! Nano-Filtration systems are not reasonable – that is, unless you compare them to the hugely costly softening systems.

That is right. The idea behind cleaning up water damage as soon as possible is to immediately stop the spread of the damage. And by extension, it is a means to ensure that you spend less on repair and more on improvement of your house. :)

Water damage in your home can be a big problem, as the water can seep through your home’s surface, and this may lead to warping. But before you start the water damage cleanup process, it’s important to assess the level of damage first. If it’s completely destroyed, call a plumbing professional, especially if you’re not able to do it yourself.

Before you begin water damage cleanup, you should check the level of damage to your home. Be sure that fresh air is moving through the area. It's better if you open the windows so that the water and moisture dries quickly and prevents molds from growing. As a safety precaution, turn off the electrical power. Water and electricity don't mix. Water is a conductor. It might be a cause of electrocution or even a fire.
